Costs and risk, stage by stage

Who does what
The seller must
- Carry the goods to the named place, by contract or its own means
- Clear the goods for export and any transit
- Bear all risks until the goods arrive at the named place
- Notify the buyer so it can take delivery
- Provide the document the buyer needs to take delivery
The buyer must
- Unload the goods at the named place
- Clear the goods for import and pay duties, taxes and import fees
- Bear the risk from delivery at the named place
- Pay the seller's extra costs if import clearance delays delivery
- Take delivery when notified
When to use it
- You want door delivery without the seller acting as importer
- Any mode, including multimodal door-to-door
- Buyers who keep their own customs broker
Be careful when
- The named place is vague: give the full address
- Your import clearance is slow: demurrage and storage at destination may be charged back to you
Tip for buying from Vietnam
DAP to your warehouse is often the best middle ground for first orders from Vietnam: the seller handles freight and risk in transit, and you keep control of import duties and VAT.
